Video 9 – The Five Ways People Get to Your Insurance Website
Transcript: Good morning. Now, I want you to imagine something with me today for just a second. Imagine that yesterday you had a new phone number installed in your office. A new line, a second line, or just a new number, and you haven’t given the number out to anybody yet. You haven’t put it on your business cards, you haven’t put it on your website, it’s not in your letterhead, it’s unlisted; the number is not in anybody’s hands. So that happened yesterday. Now, how many phone calls at that number do you think you’ll get today? And the answer is pretty obvious; you’ll get zero. No phone calls because nobody has the number, you haven’t promoted it, it’s just not out there. But the phone line is connected, but it’s just not going to ring.
Now, I bring this up because I’m surprised by how often people think that they can launch a new website, they haven’t told anybody of the website, they haven’t promoted it, they haven’t advertised it, they haven’t shared the links, but they are wondering why they don’t have any website traffic. The truth is that it’s a lot like a telephone phone number where just because it’s turned on and connected doesn’t mean people are going to come flooding to it. You still have to let them know about it, you still have to promote them, to promote the site. If you want to get traffic, you have to do some simple things.
So I thought today I would just break down the big mystery of how to get traffic to your website. And I like to think categorically, so I’m going to give you the five ways; there are five ways that people come to your website. I’m giving them to you today, I’m going to reveal the secrets. and then we’ll go from there.
So the five ways that people come to your website. The first one, really simple, is that you ask them to come, “Take a look at my website.” This could be in person, it could be a networking event, it could be on the phone, it could be via your email, but asking them to come to your website, telling them about it, giving them a reason to go look at the site, and giving them your domain name. That’s number one.
Number two is they come because they are looking for you. They heard about you through a referral, they heard about you just through the community, maybe they met you once and want to come back and track you down, and so they are looking for you. So they come and they look for your website and they find you.
The third way is a big one, which is they follow a link from another site. They follow a link from maybe a directory, they follow a link from maybe it’s a partner of yours that you share referrals with and they have a link to your site, they follow a link from an article you wrote, they follow a link from a newsletter, but they follow a link and it takes them to your site.
The fourth one which is sort of a subset of the third, but it’s different enough that it deserves its own category, is that you do some online advertising. This could be pay-per-click advertising, this could be banner ads; that sort of thing. They click on those ads to come to your site.
And the final of the five ways, this is the biggy, is that they find you in a search engine, that they’re looking for insurance information, they type in some keywords and that brings them to your site. Those are the five ways people come to your site. So when you start to wonder how do I get traffic, why are people not coming to my site, how do I get more prospects to my site, you have to begin by looking at these five ways and going through them and picking one and saying, “What can I do to get people to come to my site. Can I ask people? Are there people who are looking for me that aren’t finding me for some reason? Are there links that I could be putting somewhere that people could follow? Is there advertising that I could do? And, am I getting found in search engines?” Those five ways are high traffic to your site.
Now, we’re going to talk a lot more about each of these, a lot more about each of these. I thought it would be good to just begin by saying what are the five categories. There they are, mystery revealed, and we’ll go from there.
