We started posting daily videos on insurance websites on the last day of January 2011. Good content is key to our site’s success just as it is with yours. We determined that videos would be a great way to share content that we know our customers are looking for. Our hope is that the videos will help make you a more successful insurance agent and in the process, you’ll learn that AgentMethods is a resource you can trust. It’s been a great experience so far, giving us a new way to interact with the insurance agent community and hopefully helping you succeed along the way.
Now that we have a few months of videos behind us, I thought I would take a minute to share some of the traffic data and lessons learned:
1. Visitors to the blog have grown significantly
From January to March, monthly traffic tripled. March 2011 visits where 5x what they were in 2010. The vast majority of these visits are repeat visitors coming daily to see the new video, but new visitors are much more likely to subscribe to our emails, RSS feeds, or bookmark the site to return. In essence, the videos have made our blog “sticky” by engaging our visitors better. Here’s a graph of traffic to the blog in the past 12 months:
2. Little impact in search engine optimization
We didn’t start posting the videos as an SEO strategy although we’re often asked about the value of videos in search engine optimization. While there may be some benefit, we haven’t seen a significant increase in new visitors from search engines. This is probably because the video posts have very little text. We’re going to be experimenting with adding transcripts to the videos to see if this changes.
3. A noticeable (yet hard-to-measure) impact on new AgentMethods customers
We don’t have a way to directly track blog visitors that sign up as AgentMethods customers, but we know anecdotally that it’s happening. We talk with many of our customers and several have mentioned that they got to know us through our videos. In the first quarter of 2011, we saw our customer base nearly double. While there are a number of factors for this, we believe the videos are a primary driver.
4. We’re building a community
As the interaction around the video has grown we’ve begun to open up a dialogue with more of you. We’ve gotten to know many agents through the videos and hopefully you’ve gotten to know us as well. It wasn’t our original intent, but we now realize that we’re tapping into a community. As this community grows in size and participation, we’ll look for more ways to tap into the value of it so we can all benefit and learn from each other.
So far, this has been a great experience. It’s nice to be able to share information, help agents, and get to know you in the process. We’ve got lots more videos to come, so keep watching, commenting, and participating!
